First Week of School

Feeling grateful because "we" had a good first week of school. The highlight was Michael's Einschulung (first-day-at-a-new-school fest). Omi and Opi came for the day; Georg unfortunately was immobile because he tore his Achilles tendon last month (can't drive for 6-8 weeks with the cast), and his foot had swollen that morning.

The Eppstein school put on a good show in the community center, with the 6th graders performing dancing and singing acts to welcome the incoming 5th graders. Then the children were called up one by one to join their classroom teachers. Michael will be in a class of 27 with Frau Nürnberg. He felt quite happy because he knew many of the children in his class from grade school. He was particularly happy to find out he had been assigned to the same class as his good friends Nils and Lukas.

Then it was off to the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule, where Omi, Opi, and I sat for coffee and cake with all the other relatives, while the schoolchildren had their first two hours of school. Patrick's P.E. class was canceled, so he joined our table at 11. At noon, Michael returned, delighted to report that the first week, fifth graders would only have school from 8:30-12:15 each day.

The whole week went off without a hitch, even if it was a bit busy with many visits to the stationery store for various school supplies. The only disappointment was for Nick because he has such a bad schedule this year--Monday to Wednesday until 6 p.m., and Thursday until 4 p.m. with hours in between with no classes.
